In a recent article by Nigerian Newsnow, we captured a webinar interview involving this icon, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. Interestingly, not up to 48 hrs after, she has been endorsed as the director-general of the World Trade Organisation (WTO); another feather that will be added to her cap once she is confirmed. The endorsement is contained in a document signed by Mahamadou Issoufou, ECOWAS president.
You may want to recall that on June 4, President Muhammadu Buhari approved the nomination of the former world bank group Managing Director and ex-finance minister, Okonjo-Iweala, for the role of the director-general of the World Trade Organisation (WTO). ECOWAS called on other African countries to back Okonjo-Iweala, whom Mahamadou referred to as a “fearless reformer”. Indeed, this is true of Dr. Okonjo-Iweala as someone who served two different Nigerian presidents as a finance minister. In that webinar interview, she had said it was a tough job serving in that capacity, as one of the things you must know how to say is NO. Now, you will agree it is not a very easy thing to say ‘no’ to your boss on financial matters. But I guess, when things are not going right and you are being pressured to compromise, then your true colours will show. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, no doubt, is a woman of long-standing integrity and honesty. I do not think she has ever been accused of any vice common to many public office holders, and I know that is not a coincidence. Her values are worth emulating.
Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala is a good family person married to a neurosurgeon and is blessed with four children who are all graduates of Harvard University. She is a scholar of international repute and has served and still serves on many boards.
We want to use this medium to congratulate her on this great achievement.
