Report reaching us through Pulse.ng states that Nigeria’s former minister of petroleum Diezani Alison-Madueke who is still on trial for corruption in Nigeria has lobbied to become Trade and Investment Commissioner of the Dominican Republic and bagged a diplomatic passport. With this passport, it is claimed she is immune to arrest by any law enforcement agency, including the Interpol.
In a document shared with Pulse from the office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the restraining order reads as follows: “The President of the Commonwealth of Dominica requests and requires in the Name of the Government of Dominica all those whom it may concern to allow the bearer to pass freely without let or hindrance and afford the bearer such assistance and protection as may be necessary…. She is strengthened by a diplomatic shield that no law enforcement agency around the world can ignore. Besides, her British citizenship is another protective hedge she has been using against repatriation to Nigeria, to answer overwhelming charges of corruption against her,”
Diezani was the first woman to hold the position of Minister of Petroleum Resources in Nigeria and the first female Minister of Transportation. Also, the first woman to be appointed to the board of Shell Petroleum Development Company Nigeria. On 27 November 2014, she was elected as the first female President of OPEC.
She’s been accused of awarding multi-billion Naira contracts without recourse to due process and of recklessly spending government funds as well as wasting billions of naira inappropriately on private jets.
In October 2009, the Senate of Nigeria indicted Diezani Alison-Madueke and recommended prosecution for the transfer of 1.2 billion nairas into the private account of a toll company without due process and in breach of the concession agreement.
She was officially charged to court by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission of Nigeria for ‘Money Laundering’
With Madueke becoming a commissioner while awaiting conviction, Nigeria Newsnow is perturbed about the way the law can easily be manipulated in favour of the rich!
