Cobhams Asuquo: The Extraordinary Music Legend

Cobhams Asuquo is indeed an extraordinary man. He’s a living legendary musician who’s proved beyond any iota of doubt that there is no limitation in life except the ones we place on ourselves. Cobhams confirms himself:

“It’s assumed there are many things you can’t do because you’re blind. And so, for me, I had to prove that there are many things I can do because I’m blind and that there are many things I have done because I’m blind,”

Cobhams Asuquo’s Background and Passion

Cobhams Asuquo, a Nigerian, was born on the 6th of January 1981. One of the extraordinary things about him was that he was blind from birth. His eyes are literally open, but can’t see a single thing, physically! However, he’s always had a tuned ear for music and would literally bring out a musical sound from anything he laid his hands on!

In an interview with BBC, the music star said his love for music started manifesting when he was about six years old. “I started to puff my cheeks and play the 12-bar blues,” he said.

“I moved on from there to locking myself up in the bathroom which was, you know, the average child’s nightmare, but I would do it just because of the reverberating effect I got whenever I whistled from the bathroom

“I just enjoyed the sound. I literally would come into the living room and beat on anything I found, from the dining table to other things in the kitchen to barrels that we used for storing water, all kinds of stuff,” Asuquo recalled.

Cobhams Asuquo was studying law at the University of Lagos. This is a great lesson for all parents who write off children with one form of disability or the other. Cobhams, however, left the study of law to follow his passion and pursue his dreams in the world of music.

Marriage and Family Life

Cobhams Asuquo got married in 2010 to his heartthrob, Ojuolape, and their union is blessed with two wonderful children. Extraordinarily again, their first son, David Asuquo, like his father, is also visually impaired. Speaking in an interview, Ojuolape revealed that she didn’t know her son was blind until he was four months old. She added that when she gave birth to their first son in 2011, it was without any complications. In fact, she said she had a very smooth and quick delivery — she had had the baby in 45 minutes! An undetailed look at David Asuquo will show anyone that he’s a chip off the old block! David and his father are pure carbon copies!

How Cobhams Succeeded in his Musical Career

Cobhams signed on to Sony ATV London as a songwriter in 2005, and a year later, after working as head of audio productions for Nigerian label Questionmark Entertainment, he started his own first music production and label company, Cobhams Asuquo Music Production (CAMP) in 2008.

He recalled how he had, many times, slept on many studio floors just to get an opportunity to prove himself. The story is no longer the same today as he is now a highly sought-after musician, producer, songwriter, and director.
