The minister of Education, Adamu Adamu while speaking at the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on July 8, 2020, declared that Schools reopening and WAEC Examination will no longer be feasible as previously announced due to the increasing rate of COVID-19 pandemic. He said:
“Schools under the supervision of the federal ministry of education will not reopen on August 4th or anytime soon. Our schools will only open when we believe it is safe for our children; and that is when the situation is right; not when the incidence of the infection is going up in the nation. Yesterday, we call a meeting of stakeholders who will tell us their situation and what needs to be done in other for it to be safe. While the meeting was going on, WAEC announced that they are starting. So, let’s see who they are going to start with and I will also like to at this position appeal to those states that have already announced. I think it is not safe. I feel responsible for all children, not just the children who are in federal government-controlled schools. Please, let’s save our children from this. You can just check one scenario; one infected child going into a class is enough to infect others. This social distancing is just some beautiful theory. When the cameras are there everybody will obey it when there is no camera everybody will just be normal especially children. This is not the right time to open schools. I appeal to the states that have already announced to reconsider it. You know if we are given the choice, me, as the minister of education, I don’t mind Nigeria losing a complete school year than exposing our children to danger. I think their health is more important than the examinations they are going to write. And WAEC is a parastatal of the ministry of education; they cannot determine for the government what it does. I think they should probably change their dates or we do without them.”
As a result of this development, it is glaring Schools reopening and WAEC Examination is indefinitely postponed. Students that are already scared of failing WAEC due to ill-preparation can now go to bed again if they like. However, the wise ones should see this as a second chance to prepare.
