All is seen to be going on well with the education sector of the pacesetter state, Oyo, under the leadership of Governor Seyi Makinde, even as exiting classes have resumed some weeks ago. It will be recalled that pupils in primary six and students in JSS 3 and SSS 3 resumed on July 6. in Oyo state This is, certainly, not the case in many other states for fear of the novel coronavirus. However, in a statement issued after the Oyo State executive council meeting headed by Governor Seyi Makinde on Tuesday, 21st July, it was revealed that promotion exercise for students and pupils would now be based on the first and second term continuous assessments.
The statement read:
“The Oyo State Executive Council at its meeting today, 21st of July, 2020, has approved the academic calendar to guide resumption of schools and other associated educational activities in the state.
“According to the approved calendar, the Third Term 2019/2020 session has been canceled and promotion of students for all affected classes will now be determined by First and Second Term Continuous Assessment.”
The pupils and students in the exiting classes will go on holiday beginning July 30, before resumption for their examinations. The Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for JSS 3 students has been fixed for August 10 to 18, 2020; entrance examination into the various schools of science will take place on the 19th of August, 2020; placement/screening examination for would-be JSS1 students will hold on August 20, while placement examination into technical colleges has been slated for August 28, 2020.
As for students who are to take the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), they’ll have to wait for the date given from WAEC. Interestingly, the calendar for the 2020/2021 academic session has been planned and approved by the state executive council. Some of its content has it that:
First-term will be from September 21 to December 18, 2020; second term, January 11 to April 9, 2021; third term, May 3 to July 30, 2021.
The statement also added, “The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology enjoins all stakeholders and members of the public to take note of the details of the academic calendar”.
