Breaking: Former speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Garuba Zakawanu  is dead

It is regrettable that the ex-speaker of the Edo state house of assembly, Garuba Zakawanu has joined the list of eminent personalities in Nigeria’s political circle who have passed on in recent times. Garuba Zakawanu, a member and stalwart of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP was reported to have been ill a few days ago before eventually giving up the ghost.

Garuba Zakawanu, aged 55, was born on the 23rd of August 1965, in Akpekpe community, Auchi, in Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo state. He studied Law at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, and was called to Bar in 1990. He was elected into the Edo State House of Assembly in 2003, on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party. While serving in the state House of Assembly, he served as chairman of the House committee on judiciary, human rights, and legal matters.

He became Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly in 2007. After his service in the state House of Assembly, this forward-looking lawyer and also politician was appointed into the Board of the Securities and Exchange Commission to serve as the Executive Commissioner, Finance and Administration (now known as the corporate services directorate of the commission). It will interest you to know that he also holds the traditional titles of Oshiote of the Auchi Kingdom and Okumagbe of Uzaire.

Sadly, Nigeria has been losing many important personalities, including politicians. Just recently, the country lost stalwart politicians such as former Oyo State Governor Senator Abiola Isiaka Ajimobi who died of Covid-19 complication, former Chief of Staff Abba Kyari, member of the House of Assembly in Lagos Tunde Braimoh, amongst others. However, the cause of the death of Garuba Zakawanu is not known yet.
